XPS-Analysis of solvent residues in different polymeric biomaterials

Abstract For the use of polymers as biomaterials in production implants, several processing methods are needed. Besides injection molding or Fused Deposition Modeling temperature based processes, also solvent processes were performed such solvent-casting and electrospinning. As fabrication medical devices makes potentially hazardous toxic solvents, they have to be extracted from final device. analyses residual solvents different can used e.g. gas chromatography (GC), coulometric elemental analysis thermogravimetrical (TGA). Here we present first results for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) yield well spatial information on polymeric materials. Therefore analysed PLLA biodegradable electrospun polymer, TPC-ET biostable polymer a PLLA-iron composite example metal via XPS etching processes. It was possible determine halogen containing all tested processed solution. discrimination between made by specific elements, measurements may suitable tool identify even small amounts solvent. Thus will help optimize order remove solvents.
